Hey guys, so this next week I’m going to New York to interview Brandon’s editor Moshe and agent Joshua, along with maybe some other editors/agents in order to conduct some research for my masters project. Basically, what I’ll be doing in these interviews is trying to figure out what goes on inside the minds of New York editors and agents when they look at a new manuscript. The end goal will be creative writing rubric that will actually be useful in helping creative writing students give feedback to each other.
The interview is going to consist primarily of me handing over short writing excerpts and having Joshua or Moshe think out loud as they read it. I’m going to ask them to be as frank and uncensored as possible. If they allow me to, I’d like to record their critiques out loud and post them online along with the excerpt itself.
So the basic point is this: If you’d like to get an excerpt of yours POTENTIALLY looked at by Joshua, Moshe, or other agents, could you post the excerpt below in the comments section? About 500 words from the very beginning of your novel would be ideal. Also, only about 5 or so of these excerpts will actually get looked at, so not everyone who submits will actually be read by Joshua or moshe. Also, remember that if selected, your excerpt will likely be publicly reposted again along with the editors/agents commentary and that some of the commentary may be brutal. And potentially thousands of people could heart that brutal commentary. But it would also be an awesome learning experience. So if you have a relatively thick skin and/or a strong desire to get some honest feedback from some of the best editors and agents in the field, post away below. Thanks!
p.s. Just a heads up that this coming week’s lecture is pretty spectacular. We’ve been getting a lot of businessy stuff lately and this week Brandon discusses the nitty gritty details of how to treat your writing career as running your own personal little business
